TAMIYA TORAHIKO

(1911–1988)

   Tamiya Torahiko was a novelist from Kobe. He graduated in Japanese literature from Tokyo University and, while still a student, published his first story in a literary journal. He later taught at an all-girls school and focused on writing I-Novels. He garnered attention for his Kiri no naka (In the Mist, 1947) and subsequently published the long story Ashizuri misaki (1949; tr. The Promontory, 1966). After the death of his wife, Tamiya published a collection of letters between the two that became a bestseller, but subsequent criticism caused him to take the collection out of print. Tamiya suffered a stroke in 1988 and, unable to continue writing, he committed suicide a few months later.
